The longtime animator and color designer, who last worked on Miyazaki’s final film The Wind Rises, passed away on Oct. 5 at the age of 77 due to an illness. Michiyo basically worked with the same two animators for most of her career. She met Miyazaki, along with animator Isao Takahata, on the 1968 production of Little Norse Prince and had worked with both ever since.
Yasuda started working with Studio Ghibli from the beginning, when it was founded in 1985. She led the studio’s color department and animated on films dating back to Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind.
“What I like best is when I am building up the colors in my head, thinking of how to get the tone worked out,” she said in 2009. “Color has a meaning, and it makes the film more easily understood. Colors and pictures can enhance what the situation is on screen.”
I think everyone should take a leaf out of the French with the style, creativity and freshness they bring to the animation scene. The standard of short films, adverts and motion graphics coming out, is and has been out of this world for many many years
Logorama(2009) is a 16min animation that takes it to the next level with the amount of effort and detail that has been put in. They use an estimated 2,500 contemporary and historical corporate logos and mascots throughout the animation. It’s set of Los Angles is a great metaphor in itself with big business and Hollywood trying to rule the world as it explores the extent to which logos are embedded in our daily existence. I love the casting of the mascots such as Ronald McDonald used to portray the villain and two Michelin Men used to portray the police. This film is extraordinary and one wonders how long it took to make?
The film won more than 35 awards such as, the Prix Kodak at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival and the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film at the 82nd Academy Awards. It was also selected in around 170 film festivals such as, Sundance, Annecy International Animated Film Festival and Market (MIFA) and Cartoon d’Or.
